Volunteers in Police Service – “VIPS”

The Montoursville Police Department is looking for volunteers to be active in the “VIPS” Volunteers in Police Service Program.  The VIPS program’s origin is from 2002 when President George W. Bush, announced the creation of the USA Freedom Corps, an effort to foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility.  The Citizen Corps, which the VIPS is a program of, is a part of the USA Freedom Corps initiative and share the common goal of helping communities prevent, prepare for, and respond to crime, natural disasters and other emergencies.

The VIPS Program provides support and resources for agencies interested in developing or enhancing a volunteer program and for citizens who wish to volunteer their time and skills with a law enforcement agency in their community.

Our goal for the VIPS program is to utilize volunteers from our community to provide support in the area of organizing a Crime Watch program, traffic control at emergencies and events, street and crime prevention patrol, public police information at events or gatherings, police station duties i.e. filing, tasks, etc., overseeing community service workers as needed, as well as any other tasks that the organization feels are necessary.

The Montoursville Police Department knows of many persons in the community with a vast knowledge of law enforcement related information or those who have a desire to volunteer at a local level.  We are interested in having citizens get in on this program from the grass roots by organizing and becoming active in a VIPS program in the Borough of Montoursville that you can call your own.

More information on the VIPS can be found at www.policevolunteers.org

If you have an interest in this type of program and would like to be on the forefront of our local “VIPS”, please contact me at 570-368-2488 or by email at dstrailey@montourpd.org and let’s get this team organized.

Thanking you in advance for your interest in the Volunteers in Police Service program.

Sincerely,

Daniel C. Strailey
